Placing your trail camera – how to get the best pictures of wildlife

A good trail camera can tell you a lot about what's happening in your hunting ground when you're not there. You can track animal movement patterns, see which trails are being used, monitor specific animals, and get a much better picture of activity throughout the day.

But even the best trail camera delivers poor results if it's in the wrong place.

Placement, height, angle, light, and distance are just as important as the camera's technical specifications. At the same time, a few simple mistakes can lead to hundreds of blank images, overexposed night shots, or animals only captured with their rear ends in the frame.

Here's a practical guide on how to place and set up your trail camera.

Start by finding the animals' natural movement paths

The first question isn't which tree the camera should be on.

It's: Why would an animal pass by here?

A trail camera is most effective when placed where animals already naturally travel. Therefore, look for signs of activity in the terrain.

Good locations might include:

  • clear trails and paths
  • places where several trails meet
  • forest edges and transitions between different types of vegetation
  • access routes to fields and other foraging areas
  • watering holes
  • areas with rubs, scrapes, or other clear signs of activity
  • natural passages where the terrain guides animals through a specific area.

Tracks, droppings, hair, scrapes, and clearly trampled vegetation can all reveal where animals are moving.

So, if the camera isn't taking pictures, it doesn't necessarily mean there's no wildlife in the area. It could simply be a few meters away from the correct passage.

Understand how the motion sensor works

Most trail cameras use a PIR sensor – a passive infrared sensor – to detect activity.

The sensor doesn't just react to movement. It registers the combination of movement and temperature difference between the object and its surroundings.

A warm animal moving through a cooler area is therefore relatively easy for the camera to detect.

This also affects placement.

On very hot days, when the ambient temperature approaches the animal's body temperature, the camera's effective detection range can be shorter. Conversely, the temperature difference often increases in cold weather.

The size of the animal also plays a role. A large deer is easier to detect from a distance than, for example, a mouse or a hedgehog.

If you want to monitor small animals, the camera should therefore generally be placed closer to the area where you expect them.

The right height depends on the animal

There isn't one correct mounting height for all trail cameras.

A camera intended to photograph roe deer should naturally not be placed in the same way as a camera intended to detect mice and other small animals.

As a rule of thumb, the camera should be roughly at the body height of the species you primarily want to record.

For deer, about 1-1.5 meters (3-5 feet) above the ground will often be a sensible starting point. The camera can then be angled slightly so that the sensor's detection area matches the animals' expected position.

On sloping terrain, it's important to consider the animals' actual line of movement and not just what looks horizontal from the tree where the camera is mounted.

If the camera is too high and points too sharply downwards, you might end up with pictures of the animals' backs. If it's too low, grass and other vegetation can fill large parts of the image and also cause unnecessary activations.

Place the camera obliquely to a trail

A classic mistake is to place the camera directly perpendicular to an animal trail.

Imagine a roe deer passing quickly across the camera's field of view. The sensor detects the animal, the camera reacts, and before the picture is taken, the roe deer is almost out of the frame.

The result is often a picture of its hindquarters – or no animal at all.

Instead, place the camera at an angle to the trail, for example, about 45 degrees.

This way, the animal moves through the camera's detection area for a longer period. The sensor has an earlier opportunity to detect the animal, and the camera has more time to take a usable picture.

It can also provide multiple pictures of the same animal from different angles.

At a feeding station or another area where animals are expected to stop, this is less crucial. Here, the camera can be pointed more directly at the area you want to monitor.

Avoid pointing the camera east and west

The sun's position is one of the simplest things to consider – and at the same time, one of the mistakes that can ruin many pictures.

A camera facing east can get the morning sun directly into the lens. If it faces west, the same can happen in the evening.

This can result in overexposed pictures, strong reflections, and in some cases, false activations.

A northerly direction is therefore often a good starting point. If that's not possible, you should try to place the camera so that the sun doesn't shine directly into the lens at times when you expect the most activity.

This is especially important on trails between cover and feeding areas, where much of the activity can occur around sunrise and sunset.

Also consider the difference between light and shadow

It's not just the sun's direction that matters.

Imagine the camera deep in the shade under a dense tree, but photographing over a sun-drenched field.

The camera's light meter can detect the dark conditions around the camera itself and adjust the exposure accordingly. This can cause the much brighter area in front of the camera to become overexposed.

The opposite can also happen if the camera is in direct sun but photographs into a dark forest area.

Therefore, try as much as possible to place the camera under roughly the same lighting conditions as the area it is supposed to photograph.

Maintain the correct distance

The closer the camera is to the animal, the better the result is not necessarily true.

If a roe deer is one meter from the camera at night, the infrared illumination can severely overexpose the image. An animal moving quickly very close to the camera can also pass by before the camera reacts.

Conversely, if the camera is very far away, the animal will be small in the picture, and detection reliability can decrease.

For cloven-hoofed game in a relatively open space, about 4-6 meters (13-20 feet) can be a good starting point.

However, the precise distance depends on the camera's sensor, lens, detection area, and the situation you want to monitor.

Therefore, test images are much more valuable than a fixed rule.

Take test pictures before you leave

Once the camera is on the tree, you shouldn't just turn it on and go home.

Walk through the area yourself where you expect animals to come.

Try different distances and view the pictures if the camera allows. Check, among other things:

  • if the subject is correctly positioned in the image
  • if the angle is correct
  • if the camera detects movement early enough
  • if there are branches or grass in front of the sensor
  • if the camera points too much up or down.

A few minutes of testing during setup can save you weeks of unusable pictures.

Remove branches and tall grass in front of the camera

One of the most common reasons for hundreds of blank pictures is vegetation in front of the camera.

A blade of grass or a branch is not necessarily enough on its own to activate the PIR sensor. The problem arises, for example, when the sun heats vegetation and soil differently, while the wind causes the vegetation to move.

Then the sensor can be fooled.

Especially branches, leaves, and tall grass close in front of the camera should therefore be removed or trimmed back.

You don't need to clear the entire area. Only remove what risks blocking the lens or moving through the sensor's detection area.

Also remember that vegetation can change a lot in a few weeks. A location that is completely open in April can be covered in tall grass and leaves in June.

Secure the camera properly

The camera must be mounted on something stable.

A thin tree or a loose pole that moves in the wind can change the camera's direction and, in the worst case, result in a long series of unusable recordings.

If you use the standard strap around a tree, it should be tightened properly.

Also check the camera's angle when the strap is tightened. Tree trunks are rarely perfectly straight, and the camera can therefore easily end up pointing a few degrees upwards or downwards.

An adjustable camera mount can make it significantly easier to achieve precisely the desired angle.

Place the camera according to the season

The best camera placement in July is not necessarily the best in October.

Animal behavior changes throughout the year. Food sources disappear and emerge, vegetation changes, and movement patterns follow suit.

In summer, food and water sources can be obvious areas. Deer often follow relatively fixed routes between resting areas and food sources.

When autumn arrives, other food sources can take over. Acorns, crops, and other seasonal resources can change animal movement patterns in a short time.

During the rut, natural passages, narrow points in the terrain, and areas between animal habitats can become more significant.

After the hunting season, foraging becomes a central element again, and cameras can be used to get an impression of which animals are still in the territory.

A trail camera should therefore not necessarily hang on the same tree all year round.

Move it when animal behavior provides a good reason to – not just because there have been a few quiet days.

Give the camera time

The opposite mistake is to move the camera too quickly.

A few days without pictures doesn't necessarily say much.

Activity is affected by weather, food, disturbances, and many other factors. If you want to get to know a specific area properly, a longer time series is much more valuable than a series of short samples.

Therefore, let the camera work.

Two to four weeks at the same location can provide a much better picture of activity than constant relocations.

If you want to explore a new place, an extra camera can therefore be more valuable than moving a camera that has already collected data at the same location for a long time.

Avoid disturbing the area unnecessarily

Every time you go to the camera, you leave scent and create activity in the area.

This is particularly relevant if the camera is close to places where animals stay for extended periods.

Therefore, plan the placement so that the camera can be checked without unnecessarily moving through the areas you want to keep undisturbed.

A 4G trail camera has an obvious advantage here, as images can be sent directly to your phone. This significantly reduces the need for physical visits.

If the camera uses SD cards, you can advantageously coordinate checks with other activities in the hunting ground instead of going in just to look for pictures.

Remember batteries, memory card, and software

A perfect placement doesn't help much if the camera doesn't work.

Before setting up the camera, you should therefore check:

  • the condition of the batteries
  • that the SD card works and has sufficient space
  • date and time
  • photo and video settings
  • PIR sensitivity
  • that any 4G connection is working
  • if the manufacturer has released a firmware update.

If you have multiple cameras, it can be a great help to number both cameras and memory cards and save the locations on GPS or your phone.

It quickly becomes difficult to remember exactly which camera was where when you have multiple units distributed over a larger territory.

Protect the camera from theft

Trail cameras often hang alone in nature for weeks, and theft can never be ruled out.

However, you can make the camera less attractive and harder to find.

Avoid highly visible placements in frequented areas. The camera can also be placed higher if the angle can be adjusted correctly at the same time.

Security boxes and cable locks can make the camera more difficult to remove, although no solution is completely theft-proof.

Also, note the serial number and save the camera's precise location.

A camera also doesn't need to be camouflaged with half the forest. Excessive camouflage can paradoxically make it more visible if a clump of branches, moss, and leaves looks unnatural.

Be aware of people in the image field

A trail camera photographs what moves in front of it – including people.

The placement must therefore be chosen with regard to regulations on surveillance and personal data.

Avoid pointing the camera at publicly accessible paths, roads, or other areas where people travel, and be aware if the image field extends over neighboring areas.

Always check the applicable rules if you are unsure about a specific placement.

The best placement is found through experience

There isn't one tree, one height, or one distance that is always right.

A good placement depends on the animal species, the terrain, the season, the camera's sensor, and what you want to learn.

But some principles are consistent:

Find the natural movement paths. Place the camera at the correct height. Give the animal time in the sensor's detection area. Avoid direct sunlight. Keep vegetation away from the sensor. Test the camera before you leave the site – and then let it work long enough for the pictures to actually tell you something.

Once the cameras are properly positioned, they transform from being just cameras in the forest into an effective tool for understanding the territory.

The better you become at interpreting the images and connecting them with time, location, season, and terrain, the more you will learn about the animals that move around when you are not there.
